Jefferson Ortega is CACNY’s First Transfer Scholarship Recipient

Jefferson Ortega, a participant of New Settlement’s College Success Program, is the first recipient of the College Access Consortium of New York’s (CACNY) Michael D. Cobbins Memorial Transfer Student Scholarship.

In 2017, CACNY established the Michael D. Cobbins Memorial Transfer Student Scholarship. Michael D. Cobbins, a two-time SUNY alumnus who received both his Associate and Bachelor’s degrees from SUNY schools, returned to SUNY as a professional staff member in the late 1980s. He was a champion for college access and success in addition to being a staunch advocate and fighter for the rights of students at SUNY.

Jefferson Ortega, graduate of La Guardia Community College (LAGCC), was recognized at the December 2017 CACNY General Body Meeting as the first recipient of the Inaugural Michael D. Cobbins Memorial Transfer Student Scholarship. Jefferson is an aspiring engineer with plans to focus on environmental sustainability at either University of Buffalo or City College. CACNY congratulates Jefferson and wishes him the best in his future endeavors.
