Rent Freeze!

For most of its history, the Rent Guidelines Board (a mayor-appointed board of 9 members consisting of 5 public representatives, 2 landlord representatives, and 2 tenant representatives) routinely set unaffordable rents for the over 1 million rent-stabilized NYC tenants. CASA began organizing to fight against rent increases in 2013, and made history in 2015, and again in 2016 with the first rent freeze for rent-stabilized tenants in the history of New York City!

Due to CASA’s organizing, the Rent Guidelines Board also began holding in-person hearings in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan in the evening. We turn out in the hundreds every single year to fight for the lowest rents possible, in the face of strong opposition from landlords and anti-tenant Mayor Eric Adams.
