New Settlement was recently selected as the lead agency of New York State’s Gun Violence Prevention Initiative in The Bronx! Working with two partner agencies, we are expanding youth development and leadership programs across our Bronx neighborhoods. Assemblywoman Joyner Presents $150,000 NYSDOL Grant to YAOI

On Tuesday, July 13, New Settlement and Assemblywoman Latoya Joyner (D-Bronx, 77th AD) announced a $150,000 grant from the New York State Department of Labor that will enable the organization’s Young Adult Opportunity Initiative (YAOI) to expand its reach to Bronx youth as they seek employment and educational opportunities.The awarded funds will create employment and educational opportunities for 160 out-of-school, out-of-work youth ages 17-24 in the Southwest Bronx-Mount Eden community, and serve 150 alumni in 2021. Ninety of these youth will be placed directly in permanent jobs and/or internships.

New Settlement commemorated the expansion during a special ceremony at its YAOI Center in the Bronx with Assemblywoman Joyner, YAOI participants and alumni. “Enhancing skills and expanding opportunities, New Settlement’s Young Adult Opportunity Initiative is preparing Bronxites for the highly competitive job market and I am very happy to have secured $150,000 for this valuable program,” Assemblywoman Joyner said.

Join Us This Summer! New Settlement has Partnered with the Fresh Air Fund to Offer a Play Street this Summer on Rockwood Avenue!

New Settlement is excited to partner with the Fresh Air Fund to offer a Play Street this summer on Rockwood Avenue in the Bronx. Enjoy a fun, free, and safe play space for NYC children ages 5-12. Activities will include sports, arts & crafts, STEM, music, reading & more! The Play Street will run from July 6th – August 19th. June 19th, also known as Juneteenth, Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day is the day of the enslaved people in the United States heard of their emancipation. We are happy to announce that Juneteenth is officially a national holiday. Come celebrate Juneteenth with us on Saturday, June 19th. This free event will be located at the New Settlement Community Center playground 1501 Jerome Avenue Bronx NY (off the corner of 172nd street and Jerome Avenue). Come for the food.
