Introducing the 170 Farm Stand!

As you may have guessed from the job postings above, we will be starting a new local food initiative this summer. The 170 (“one-seven-oh”) Farm Stand will be a new source of fresh, affordable local produce in the Mount Eden neighborhood, and all items available to buy on the spot (market style). The 170 Farm Stand will operate on Wednesdays from 2:30 to 6:30pm starting on July 5th, at the corner of 170th Street and Townsend Avenue.Products will be sourced from small and mid-size farms in the Northeast region through Greenmarket Co. The types of produce that we sell from week to week will be guided by requests and interest from the community. If it can be grown locally, we can try to get it for you! Check out this chart of what might be available at different times throughout the season.

Our Culinary Educator staff will lead Farmer’s Market for Kids programming for families during each farm stand day. Payments accepted will include cash, credit/debit, EBT, Health Bucks, WIC FMNP checks, and Senior FMNP checks.

Community Food Action made the decision to operate the 170 Farm Stand independently so that we can best respond and adapt to community feedback. However, we could not do it without technical assistance and training from GrowNYC, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Farmers Market Federation of New York, and the Just Food Farmer’s Market Network.

We are very excited to build community around this new source of nutritious, delicious food. Stay tuned for more information as the summer approaches!

Bronx Healthy Beverage Zone

On April 18th, the Bronx Healthy Beverage Zone had its official launch. This project was developed out of the #Not62 campaign. From the Healthy Beverage Zone website:Our goal in launching this borough-wide initiative is to build a movement to promote healthy beverage options for all who work, live, and visit the Bronx!

The HBZ is an evidence-based project led by Union Community Health Center, Bronx Health REACH, and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Bronx Neighborhood Health Action Center to assist organizations interested in becoming a HBZ site in creating a supportive environment to promote healthy beverage options at their workplaces.

Any Bronx worksite can join the Healthy Beverage Zone. Check out the toolkit and contact HBZ to learn more about the levels and commitment for partnership.
