Summer 2019

This summer we’re doing something a little different, partnering with two other non-profit organizations to bring Arts, Leadership and STEAM opportunities to the girls and young women we serve.  As always, our summer programs are FREE, and enrollment is open on a first come-first served basis.

Shake It Out ‘This Is Me’ Theater & Leadership Program (July 15-19 and July 22-26)

Offered in partnership with Shake It Out, Inc., this dynamic theater arts intensive for girls and young women includes play-writing, improvisation, movement, poetry, storytelling, yoga, basic costume & set design and workshops with guest artists. Each week culminates with an intimate performance of the original theater piece created. We will explore all aspects our identity – both socially and emotionally. We want to hear what YOU have to say about what it feels like for YOU to grow up in 2019. What are you passionate about? What are your goals? Dreams? What do you believe in? What will you take a stand against? WHAT. IS. YOUR. STORY? And how can collaboration with other sister artists amplify your message?

Week 1 – Shake It Out runs from July 15-19, and meets 9am-4pm at 1525 Townsend Ave., though we will also make use of the New Settlement Community Center and nearby parks, as well as take trips to Victory Dance and other fun locations! This week is open to ages 11-18, and offers 24 spots.

Week 2 – Shake It Out RETREAT* runs from July 22-16, and is open to ages 13-18, with 12 spots available. RETREAT week will take the group to SUNY New Paltz.  We will meet at 1525 Townsend Monday 9am-4pm for a day of panel discussions, personal storytelling, and setting into this smaller ensemble – beginning to decide what stories this group wants to tell. Tuesday at 9am the group will get on a bus and depart for SUNY New Paltz campus, where they will stay in the dormitory, have meals in the campus dining halls, and enjoy access to the Theater Department spaces for work-shopping and rehearsal.  Not to mention the beautiful outdoors — weather permitting, there will be light hiking, a barbecue, and potentially other outdoor recreational activities. The group will stay three nights, returning to the Bronx on Friday afternoon, and sharing their created performance in the Bronx (Friday July 26th at 3pm) to wrap up the program. Applicants for the RETREAT week must participate in Week 1 as well, to get to know staff and each other. Week 2 provides an opportunity to deepen the work from Week 1. Any exceptions to this requirement require special approval.  *Applicants for Week 2 must complete the RETREAT application pages at the end of the Summer Enrollment Packet. All other summer applicants may leave those pages blank.
