Project Details IN MY WORDS was an intensive arts workshop incorporating music, poetry, storytelling and filmmaking for young women aged 13-18 in the South Bronx.

Offered at no cost to participating girls and young women, IN MY WORDS explored the role of the arts in personal growth and community health, and art as a catalyst for social change. Each year for five years (2015-2019) IN MY WORDS engaged participating girls and young women with a minimum total of 45 hours of intensive arts training and piece-making in multiple media during (NYC public school) Spring Recess.

A letter from Renee to the 2018 IN MY WORDS Ensemble  Congratulations! You made it through a Spring Break filled with snow. Endured sliding down the muddy mountains of upstate New York. Survived 45 hours of intensive art training. Successfully produced and performed your own original hour-long show! It took guts to be so vulnerable. I appreciate your heart and the power it took to bring your words to reality. You may have begun the program studying female pioneers but you left being one. May your pen always be as sharp as the sword of a ninja. Let your thoughts and actions remain sincere. Continue to reach your community and families through your work . Most importantly, strive to always stay in the driver’s seat of your life. Remember only YOU can demonstrate to the world your experience.

With Love,
Renee Benson
