On February 8th, CMSP 327, the middle school and high school located in the New Settlement Community Campus, held a Career Day to expose its students to different types of careers and allow them to learn from real people’s experiences and challenges throughout their career paths. Guest speakers came from a wide range of careers – from theater, to medicine, to police work, to teaching, to CMSP 327\u2019s own school safety agents – and visited classrooms to have conversations with students.

Community Food Action’s Community Engagement Specialist, Jenina Podulka, joined as a guest speaker\u00a0to talk about careers in food, and particularly in food justice. Many students were not yet familiar with the concept of food justice, but once it was introduced to them the conversations that followed were very dynamic.

In one middle school classroom,\u00a0the teacher had produced public service announcements\u00a0for the\u00a0NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene<\/a>\u00a0and she gave the students some background on the\u00a0#Not62 campaign<\/a>.\u00a0Jenina added that the Bronx\u2019s position as 62 out of the 62 counties in New York in terms of health rankings is a direct result of\u00a0Bronx residents being treated unfairly and not given the same opportunities as those who live in other parts of New York City,\u00a0and that people are coming together to fight against that. Many students agreed that this was an important cause that they might want to get involved in.

In a\u00a0high school classroom, students spoke in depth about their complicated relationship with fast food and junk food, and how the more they learn about where the food comes from and how it is prepared, the less they want to eat it. Jenina spoke about how large food corporations are concerned with their profits first and foremost, and one student made the following\u00a0haunting observation –\u00a0“So you’re saying that all they care about is making money, even if their food is killing us?”
