The 170 Farm Stand has now successfully completed its first season! The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene recently started a series of interviews called Humans of Farmers Markets (based on\u00a0Humans of New York<\/a>),\u00a0and it inspired us to celebrate by chatting with two of our regular customers, Kristan and Eulah.<\/p>\n

“I’m not vegetarian or vegan or paleo or whatever, I just try and eat a lot of vegetables and try to cook my own food as often as I can, because then I know exactly what’s in it. Since we’re in New York I can go into the city, and in Manhattan I can get pretty much anything. But there’s not as much available in this neighborhood. Now I’m getting more vegetables because I’m coming here [to the 170 Farm Stand] once a week.”<\/p>\n

“My advice to other New Yorkers is to shop at the farmers market. The produce is fresh, it’s healthier – because I’m 80 years of age and I know things! And that rapport between the customer and the vendor is important.\u00a0I used to have to go all the way to 14th Street [Union Square Farmers Market] to find the proper foods, so the 170 Farm Stand came in very convenient for me.”<\/p>\n

In November Parents gathered for their first Cooking Club meeting of the year. Each month one parent in the Cooking Club has the responsibility to think of a healthy recipe without any meat, fish and dairy products. Then July, our FoodCorps member at PS 294 (who is also a parent of two students there), brings all of the ingredients for that recipe to the next meeting and researches information about the main ingredient. At the meeting, the parent who chose the recipe shares their knowledge about how to make it and leads everyone in preparing it together. This month, parents prepared guacamole and July shared information about the uses, benefits, and ways to consume avocados.<\/p>\n

On November 17th, parents, students, and volunteers from GrowNYC gathered with July to care for the sidewalk trees surrounding PS 294, PS 311, and the PS 64 Play Park. Everyone learned about composting and the process of caring for the trees, and then gave the trees some TLC. Now that they are in their optimal state, the trees that the group worked on are estimated to absorb over 8,000 gallons of stormwater each year to help protect the neighborhood from floods, as well as remove 13 pounds of pollutants from the air each year. We take care of them, and they take care of us!<\/p>\n

July and Shey, the FoodCorps member at PS 311, also held a “Gardening with Parents” day where parents enjoyed helping out in the school garden by cleaning up, harvesting, planting seeds, and learning how to plant “starts”. July was very proud to be able to teach her fellow parents of PS 294 students about planting starts, because she just recently learned herself as part of her FoodCorps member training. The parents loved this activity, and were very excited to continue to develop their gardening skills together throughout the rest of the year.<\/p>\n
