Students present the results of their investigation of the NYC DOE’s Alternative Menu<\/strong><\/h1>\n

On October 17th, five of the CMSP 327 students who participated in a project led by Community Food Action at New Settlement and the\u00a0Center for Urban Pedagogy (<\/a>CUP<\/a>)<\/a>\u00a0presented their learnings and the\u00a0poster<\/a>\u00a0that they created at Bronx Health REACH’s School-Based Nutrition and Fitness Workgroup meeting.<\/p>\n

Students explained that even though their school liked having the Alternative Menu, which is one of NYC SchoolFood’s fresher and more plant-based menu options, students and school staff had become increasingly concerned about issues with quality of the food served in the cafeteria and the number of students eating the food was decreasing – meaning that even if the food was healthy, the students were not benefiting from it. The students worked with teaching artist Elma Relihan from CUP, Vivian Vazquez, Director of Community School Partnerships, and Taisy Conk, Director of Community Food Action, on an investigation of the issues surrounding school food and specifically the Alternative Menu.<\/p>\n

Students said that they learned a lot and enjoyed the project, in which they went on trips and held interviews with experts. They pointed out the need for more awareness about SchoolFood’s available options – “I didn’t know what the Alternative Menu was until we did this project,” said one student. Students challenged the perception that peer pressure is a main reason for students not eating school food, saying that they would eat food regardless of what their friends thought if they liked it, but some of the food they have been served was incorrectly prepared or very unappetizing.<\/p>\n

Los estudiantes dijeron que aprendieron mucho y disfrutaron del proyecto, en el cual hicieron viajes y entrevistas con expertos. Se\u00f1alaron la necesidad de mayor conocimiento sobre las opciones disponibles de SchoolFood – “No sab\u00eda lo que era el men\u00fa alternativo hasta que hicimos este proyecto”, dijo una estudiante. Attendees of the Bronx Health REACH meeting pointed out that if teachers ate the school lunch, then they could better understand students’ concerns and be able to advocate along with the students. Students agreed and expressed that if the food was good enough for the teachers to eat, then students would probably be much more encouraged to eat it as well.<\/p>\n

\nMy favorite part of my job is the roles that rotate every week. For example cashier, or restocking, or outreach, which is fun. Getting a chance to make new and healthy friendships.<\/p>\n

What are some obstacles that residents of the neighborhood face when it comes to healthy eating? How does the 170 Farm Stand aim to address those challenges?<\/em>
\nSome obstacles are that not a lot of us eat healthy, especially because we’re surrounded by fast food restaurants. The 170 Farm Stand stands in the middle of them to show how good healthiness can be.<\/p>\n
