Violeta helped\u00a0the students\u00a0make connections between the food on their plate, where it came from, and\u00a0the journey that it took to get there. In one\u00a0lesson\u00a0called \u201cCutting out the Middle Man\u201d, Violeta showed the students all of the steps that our food takes from the farm to the supermarket.\u00a0They\u00a0learned what foods can grow locally in our region and what can&#8217;t, and the reasons why supermarkets often don&#8217;t sell local food. Then Violeta\u00a0showed them how different the process looks when you buy\u00a0food from farmer&#8217;s markets\u00a0&#8211; there are less &#8220;middle men&#8221;, less harmful effects on\u00a0the environment, and the food is tastier and fresher.<br \/>\nEste verano, un grupo de estudiantes del campamento de verano de New Settlement Creative Leaders se uni\u00f3 a nuestra Asistente de Participaci\u00f3n de la Comunidad, Violeta Valdez, por cuatro lecciones sobre jardiner\u00eda y nutrici\u00f3n en el jard\u00edn en el techo del New Settlement Community Center. The students learned to identify different plants, vegetables, and herbs and how to utilize them in the kitchen. They also learned how important insects are to the garden, from the bees that pollinate flowers and allow them to produce fruits and vegetables, to the worms that help make the soil nutritious for plants, to other insects that act as food sources for animals, or predators to other insects who harm us or the plants. The students tasted fresh tomatoes straight from the vine, and picked swiss chard to add to a delicious fruit\u00a0smoothie. They really enjoyed watering\u00a0the garden each week, and learning\u00a0techniques to care for the plants.<br \/>\nCada lecci\u00f3n inclu\u00eda tiempo en el jard\u00edn. Then they\u00a0went into the garden and planted their own Calypso Beans. Through their workshops they explored topics such as the meaning of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/usfoodsovereigntyalliance.org\/what-is-food-sovereignty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">food sovereignty<\/a>, what kinds of foods are available in their community and who gets to make decisions about it, how our food system works and how much food is wasted along the way, and calculating how many miles different types of food travel before it gets to our plate. The final workshop was a visit to La Finca del Sur, a women of color led farm in the South Bronx. Regina Ginyard, one of the co-founders of La Finca and National Coordinator of Black Urban Growers (BUGS), spoke to the youth about the importance of this women of color led space in a food justice world that very often does not reflect the diversity of the city. The youth then got an opportunity to connect with the land and care for some of the farm&#8217;s communal garden beds.<br \/>\nEste verano, nuestros ocho L\u00edderes Juveniles no s\u00f3lo trabajaron en el Mercado Local de la 170 cada semana, sino que tambi\u00e9n completaron una serie de talleres sobre la justicia alimentaria.
