On July 1, Community Food Action program participants, staff from New Settlement’s youth programs that do cooking and nutrition education, and the Community Food Action team visited McEnroe Organic Farm in Millerton, NY. We toured the animal barns, greenhouses, and compost operation, ate lunch prepared with fresh meat and vegetables from the farm, picked our own strawberries and bundles of herbs to take home, and planted basil to take home and grow.

At the compost facility, we learned that plastic has to be sorted out of the compost mechanically and by hand, and that the piles of compost get so hot as they decompose that they give off steam even in the winter. McEnroe’s composting operation was mentioned in\u00a0this New York Times Magazine article from February<\/a>. Seeing it brought up questions among the group about what New York City is doing around composting, and how NYC residents can learn more and get involved. The 170 Farm Stand Youth Leaders, with Farm Stand Manager Ciena and Community Engagement Specialist Jenina. Youth Leaders serve the community at the farm stand on Wednesdays and learn more about food justice issues and why fresh, local food is important on Fridays.

New Settlement Summer Day Camp at PS 64\u00a0campers with veggies they bought from the farm stand using the Health Bucks coupons they receive at the end of the workshop. This gives them the opportunity to put into practice what they learned in the workshop, as well as help out their families by bringing home groceries!
