Community Food Action coordinated the project with support from Vivian Vasquez, the Director of Community School Partnerships at the New Settlement Community Campus. Many people feel that the food served each day in public schools across the city is not healthy and tastes less than satisfactory, but few know that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.schoolfoodnyc.org\/AboutUs\/aboutus.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYC SchoolFood<\/a>\u00a0has a centralized menu with three different options: the Regular, Alternative, and Vegetarian menus. The New Settlement Community Campus (where CMSP 327 is located) has served the Alternative Menu, which is more plant-based and less processed,since its opening\u00a0and Wellness in the Schools has provided hands-on programming at the school campus for the past few years to get students excited about the healthier items on the menu. They learned that because many students have grown up with and become accustomed to the processed meals they were previously given, they were not used to the healthier menus. The students also interviewed professionals who work on their school campus to learn more in depth about school food. They spoke to their principal, Alix Ricci,\u00a0and Chef Kent from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wellnessintheschools.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wellness in the Schools<\/a>. Then to get a policy level perspective they interviewed Diana Cimino, the Food Policy Coordinator at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.humanesociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Humane Society of the United States<\/a>, who spoke about the importance of local initiatives and local government in creating a large change. They also attended a panel at the\u00a0NYC Food Policy Center at Hunter College entitled &#8220;How NYC SchoolFoods Works from the Inside&#8221;, with Stephen O&#8217;Brien,\u00a0Director of Food and Food Support, as one of the panelists, and the students had the opportunity to ask questions.<br \/>\nLos estudiantes investigaron lo que sus compa\u00f1eros y las familias en la comunidad piensan sobre el almuerzo escolar con una encuesta comunitaria. They will use what they learn to make decisions about how the farm stand operates, and respond to the interests and requests of their fellow community members.
