This spring, a cohort of 20 high school students at CMSP 327 dedicated two days a week after school\u00a0to investigate what\u2019s served in their school cafeteria with Elma Relihan, a Teaching Artist from\u00a0CUP (the Center for Urban Pedagogy)<\/a>. \nEsta primavera, una cohorte de 20 estudiantes de secundaria de la CMSP 327 dedic\u00f3 dos d\u00edas a la semana despu\u00e9s de la escuela a investigar la comida que se sirve en la cafeter\u00eda de la escuela con Elma Relihan, artista de a ense\u00f1anza de\u00a0CUP (Center for Urban Pedagogy)<\/a>. \u00a1Vea el cartel que crearon\u00a0aqu\u00ed<\/a>!CUP is a nonprofit organization that creates projects that help simplify urban policy issues so average citizens can understand them and how they can help. Community Food Action coordinated the project with support from Vivian Vasquez, the Director of Community School Partnerships at the New Settlement Community Campus. Many people feel that the food served each day in public schools across the city is not healthy and tastes less than satisfactory, but few know that\u00a0NYC SchoolFood<\/a>\u00a0has a centralized menu with three different options: the Regular, Alternative, and Vegetarian menus. The New Settlement Community Campus (where CMSP 327 is located) has served the Alternative Menu, which is more plant-based and less processed,since its opening\u00a0and Wellness in the Schools has provided hands-on programming at the school campus for the past few years to get students excited about the healthier items on the menu. Through the project the students learned the complexity and larger forces that shape the Alternative Menu and the SchoolFood system as a whole.

They learned that because many students have grown up with and become accustomed to the processed meals they were previously given, they were not used to the healthier menus. The students also interviewed professionals who work on their school campus to learn more in depth about school food. They spoke to their principal, Alix Ricci,\u00a0and Chef Kent from\u00a0Wellness in the Schools<\/a>. Then to get a policy level perspective they interviewed Diana Cimino, the Food Policy Coordinator at\u00a0the Humane Society of the United States<\/a>, who spoke about the importance of local initiatives and local government in creating a large change. They also attended a panel at the\u00a0NYC Food Policy Center at Hunter College entitled “How NYC SchoolFoods Works from the Inside”, with Stephen O’Brien,\u00a0Director of Food and Food Support, as one of the panelists, and the students had the opportunity to ask questions.

170 Farm Stand season has begun!

The 170 Farm Stand’s opening day was\u00a0Wednesday, July 5th. From now until November 22, come by on\u00a0Wednesdays\u00a0from 2:30-6:30pm, at the corner of 170th St. & Townsend Avenue<\/strong>\u00a0to check out our fresh, affordable local produce,\u00a0participate in our Farmers Markets for Kids workshops\u00a0for kids\u00a0ages 4-11 and their caretakers, and if you have SNAP, get a $2 Health Bucks coupon for every $5 you spend.

Through this Youth Leaders Series, the\u00a0youth will deepen their knowledge about the issues that the farm stand seeks to address by\u00a0calculating\u00a0how many miles food travels before it gets to our plate, weighing the pros and cons of having fast food franchises in your neighborhood,\u00a0learning what\u00a0food sovereignty<\/a>\u00a0means, and much more. They will use what they learn to make decisions about how the farm stand operates, and respond to the interests and requests of their fellow community members. The Youth Leaders Series is made possible by Community Food Action’s grant from\u00a0The Levitt Foundation.

Congratulations to all of the students\u00a0in the Mount Eden community who celebrated graduations this June!\u00a0The first-ever\u00a05th grade graduating class at PS 294 left the school\u00a0a really cool class gift –\u00a0a colorful mural inside the school, paying homage to the joys of reading and gardening!\u00a0The design and painting of the mural was coordinated by Ms. Nilan, the Literacy Coach at PS 294 who is an integral part of the school’s wellness work. The mural was painted\u00a0in\u00a0by the students themselves!
