{"id":3188,"date":"2020-12-05T18:47:50","date_gmt":"2020-12-05T23:47:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsettlement.org\/food\/?p=3188"},"modified":"2021-01-27T11:21:16","modified_gmt":"2021-01-27T16:21:16","slug":"connection-a-sixteen-weeks-journey-of-fmk-zooms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsettlement.org\/food\/2020\/12\/05\/connection-a-sixteen-weeks-journey-of-fmk-zooms\/","title":{"rendered":"Connection: A Sixteen-Week Journey of FMK Zooms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Lana Alman, Culinary Educator<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Having the opportunity to work with Community Food Action as this season&#8217;s Farmers Market for Kids Culinary Educator gave me a great sense of hope and inspiration, especiall<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">y<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in these difficult times<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0when people crave human interaction<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Starting in August, we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">embarked on a 16<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">week journey of zoom<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, culinary experiments, funny camera angels, and most importantly, community building.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In these four months, in addition to teaching about\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">seasonal eating and healthy cooking,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e travelled around the globe, heard family stories, and cr<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ated connections beyond the screen.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Transitioning in-person culinary education sessions to a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">virtual<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0format presented us with numerous challenges. Choppy\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wi-Fi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, connectivity issues, and the mute button threw us curve balls on a weekly basis. Perhaps even a bigger\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">obstacle\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was that kids weren\u2019t able to touch, taste, or smell the food through the screen.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Thanks to technology\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">however\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we were able to create visually\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">engaging<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/THPDsA1HJq4\">content<\/a> and incorporate elements of storytelling,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">games, and interactive activities.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Each week we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">featured\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a drawing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">prompt<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for kids to share\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">their favorite\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fruit<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> or vegetables, seeds, or season of the year.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kids loved to put their drawings up to the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">screen as we spotlight<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed them<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0on camera.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLo55wUjtJ8L18hIjQl9assxxEo0dLSFSP\">Music<\/a> from all over the world was incorporated\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to inspire the drawing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3196\" src=\"https:\/\/newsettlement.org\/food\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/12\/IMG-20201112-WA0005-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"390\" height=\"520\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newsettlement.org\/food\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/12\/IMG-20201112-WA0005-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/newsettlement.org\/food\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/12\/IMG-20201112-WA0005-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newsettlement.org\/food\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/12\/IMG-20201112-WA0005-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/newsettlement.org\/food\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/12\/IMG-20201112-WA0005-450x600.jpg 450w, https:\/\/newsettlement.org\/food\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/12\/IMG-20201112-WA0005.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 390px) 100vw, 390px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We often referred to a map of the world to show kids where the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ingredients<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">were originally<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0grown<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">thank<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the farmers who cultivate the land today<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. We pointed to Belgium for Brussels sprouts, Kazakhstan for apples, and Peru for potatoes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Kids were delighted <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to hear that fruits and vegetables had their own families and travel stories<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The group was as diverse as our recipes, with families from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ecuador, Mexico, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">joining our weekly sessions.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Switching between English and Spanish, m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">oms often share<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the unique names for how they refer to fruits and vegetables and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">told us about\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">native recipes that they make at home.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From these\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">conversations we learned about\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bayos<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ayocotes<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">chil<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cayotes<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These sessions not only\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">gave kids a space to learn, but for the moms to teach us about traditional cuisine from around the region.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in-person<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0sessions,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">parents\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tended to be in more of an observer\u2019s role, whereas during the virtual <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sessions,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">they\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">participated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n conversations and weekly activities, which wasn\u2019t\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">only an enriching experience for the kids<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0but also for the adults.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Like family, we celebrated holidays and birthdays on our weekly zoom sessions. We spoke about World Indigenous People&#8217;s Day, Native American and Hispanic Heritage Months<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and even squeezed National Nut Day in October. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And l<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ike every community, we incorporated rituals into ours. We began every session by featuring photos of the kids who came to the 170 Farm Stand the day before. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And we started each<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">culinary demo<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">by washing our hands<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, putting\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our aprons, and our chef\u2019s hats<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">even if it was pretend, the kids loved to play along<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ritual is key to community building, and these small\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">touches<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">gave families a sense of belonging and routine.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From just a few participants during our first week to over a dozen zooms on the gallery view<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in our final session, these weekly gatherings served as a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">space for families to connect\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">beyond the screen.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As we brough<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0our season to a close, m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">oms\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">expressed a sense of gratitude for the weekly sessions, and a desire to continue in the future. They enjoyed meeting new people,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hearing their children\u2019s ideas<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and spending time together.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Creating connection in COVID isn\u2019t easy, but i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t sure is possible.
