We are grateful and fortunate to be able to once more host FoodCorps<\/a> at<\/span>\u00a0New Settlement, and we\u2019re stoked to introduce you to our Service Members for the new academic year 2020-2021<\/span>!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Katya<\/span>, who will be serving at PS 294, the\u00a0<\/span>Walton Avenue School, <\/span>is passionate about using food as a form of medicine, and working towards a system that prioritizes food access equity. After volunteering for an after-school gardening program, Katya found joy working with children in\u00a0<\/span>the outdoors<\/span>. She hopes to help children learn how to love trying new things and how to care for others and the environment<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Eva grew up in Washington Heights and is a proud graduate of the NYC public school system.\u00a0<\/span>She\u00a0<\/span>is grateful to the amazing teachers who nurtured her curiosity, and hopes to do the same for the students of PS 42, the Claremont Community School, where she\u2019ll serve\u00a0<\/span>the 2020-2021 school year.<\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I<\/span>n college<\/span>, Eva<\/span> aided in organizing a local CSA (C<\/span>ommunity S<\/span>upported\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>griculture) initiative<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>through a\u00a0<\/span>subsidized program.\u00a0<\/span>Working\u00a0<\/span>the CSA program<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>she\u00a0<\/span>learned about food apartheid in the United States. Eva hopes to instill a love of food in children, and aid in giving them the tools to represent their communities to eradicate food apartheid and inequity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With Katya and Eva on board, we\u2019re brewing<\/span>\u00a0a healthy tea of patience, compassion and creativity to tackle t<\/span>his\u00a0<\/span>unprecedented school year<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On another front, we are celebrating\u00a0<\/span>the half-season mark\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>the 170 Farm Stand and Farmers Markets for Kid<\/a><\/span>s<\/span>!<\/span>\u00a0Due to COVID-19,\u00a0<\/span>this season\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>FMK workshops have been led virtually since August 12<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0and we are extremely humbled for the beautiful\u00a0<\/span>virtual\u00a0<\/span>community we have been able to build o<\/span>ver these last 8 weeks.\u00a0<\/span>Shout out to all our families and specially to our season\u2019s FMK Culinary Educator, Lana Alman, w<\/span>hose support and creativity pushes us to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>enhanc<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0our virtual\u00a0<\/span>teaching and learning.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Having an opportunity to serve as the Bilingual Culinary Educator for the Farmers Market for Kids is a way for Lana to share her passion for healthy eating and community building, while contributing to the well-being of children and families of diverse backgrounds. Lana believes that everyone should have access to nutritious food and seasonal fruits and vegetables, and is excited to be part of Community Food Action\u2019s social justice programming.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
