The current health crisis has exacerbated the inequalities of our present health and food systems and we are now more than ever committed to our mission for collective health. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The shift to remote learning has everyone upside down, and it has made visible what\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lready knew to be a challenge for many of our school families: access to information and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">digital platform know-how<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, not to mention other important struggles like the ones for fair and affordable housing and access to healthy foods. Courtesy of FoodCorps SM, Selma.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On the front of providing access to healthy foods, we\u2019re hopeful and grateful as now more than ever, we\u2019ve been reassur<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed of our mission reflecting on the fact <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0one thi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ng we can\u2019t do without is food; and not just any food<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <em>good<\/em> food. In the blink of an eye, individuals and groups from the private and public sector have mobilized to organize emergency food\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">distribution across the city. And in the food systems conversations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> we are participating<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, there\u2019s talk about strategy not only to pilot partnerships and new ways to provide this type of relief in times of crisis, but to also call for improvements and expansion at the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/office-of-the-mayor\/news\/455-19\/mayor-de-blasio-appoints-kate-mackenzie-director-the-mayors-office-food-policy\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mayor\u2019s Office\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">of Food Policy<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and shaping a centralized system of action that would strengthen local food supply and get\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">real<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0food to people in times of crisis and not.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As we continue to navigate this fast-changing environment,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we are reminded of what this land looked like before colonization. For the Natives, the earth is sacred because it provides all that we need to surv<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ive and live healthy lives.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Now is the time to reconsider our treatment of the E<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span>rth. Have our dominant, racist, and extractive ways brought us here, where we are today? <span data-contrast=\"auto\">We\u2019d like to offer you all a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">prayer from th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Haudenosaunee<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> people, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">their\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/danceforallpeople.com\/haudenosaunee-thanksgiving-address\/haudenosaunee-thanksgiving-address-6\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Thanksgiving address to the Food Plants<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With one mind, we turn to honor and thank all the Food Plants we harvest from the garden. Since the beginning of time, the grains, vegetables, beans and berries have helped the people survive. Many other living things draw strength from them too. We gather all the Food Plants together as one and send them our greetings and our thanks.
