Music for the People NYC

About us

New Settlement Community Center, in partnership with Music For The People NYC, seeks to empower our community through music by providing instruction and performance opportunities in violin, voice, piano, and guitar.  All teaching artists are professionals trained in Vocal Coaching, Musical Theater, and Classical Jazz, as well as World Music styles. Classes are for fourteen weeks during the school year and seven weeks during the summer.

Bronx Musical Theater

Musical Theater I & II (5-12 yrs old )

For our youngest singers, this introduction to musical theater repertoire combines fun music theater games, songs, music skills, and choreography. With a live pianist and expert musical theater coach, students learn performance and rehearsal techniques through a wide range of musical theater hits like The Wiz and Annie. Each semester ends with a final performance for the entire family.

Guitar 

Guitar I & II (5-8, 9-12, & 13+)

Guitar I

Learn about the parts, strings and fret-board positions of the acoustic guitar. Play fun and easy songs that help to develop coordination, and note reading and gain a basic understanding of chords.

Guitar II

This intermediate group class involves building technical skills needed to play scales and chords. Students will learn fingerings and songs from the Classical, Jazz and World Music repertoire.

Piano

Piano I & II (5-8, 9-12, & 13+)

Piano I

Have fun playing easy songs on the piano. Learn to read music notes. Students will practice finger exercises that strengthen left and right-hand coordination. Through interactive games and imitation exercises, students will learn the basic first steps to creating a solid foundation on the piano.

Piano II

In this group class, students apply their basic knowledge of note reading and finger patterns to reading scales, technical exercises, playing and performing music from the Classical, Jazz and World Music repertoire.

Violin

Violin I & II (5-8, 9-12, & 13+)

Violin I

Learn the parts of the violin. How to take care of your instrument. How to stand and hold the bow. Students will learn the function of the left and right hand, how to pluck the strings and to play with the bow on open strings. Basic principles of music notation will be taught through folk songs, easy music that builds skills and confidence.

Violin II

Students in this group class will be guided through technical exercises that create finger strength and agility. The major focus of this class will be to achieve a basic knowledge of musical scales, using the bow, left-right-hand coordination. Students will be invited to play and perform Classical, Pop and World Music styles that they learned in class.
