New Settlement\u2019s Youth Leaders Explain Student Success Centers<\/h3>The overarching cultural-change strategy of the Student Success Center model is to create a culture of college possibility that permeates a schools\u2019 climate, classrooms and activities. The program design is focused on the power of peer to peer support and learning. Youth leaders are trained by community based staff and College Access Research and Action (CARA) so that they are equipped with the skills, knowledge and attitudes to educate and assist their peers with the college admissions process.\r\n<\/span><\/div><\/a>

College Explorers in Our Students Words<\/h3>Designed to build a pipeline that supports high-school completion into college entrance for 50-70 youth who sustain their involvement over four years, this year-long program explores students\u2019 career and post-secondary educational options\u2014through experiential workshops; one-to-one academic advising sessions with staff; community-service projects; and trips to institutions of higher education in NYC and the metro area.\r\n<\/span><\/div><\/a>

New Settlement\u2019s College Coach and Youth Leader Appear with CARA on New York Viewpoint.<\/h3>Through comprehensive training and support by New Settlement and CARA (www.caranyc.org), our Youth Leaders and College Coaches develop the skills and content knowledge that they need to support their peers with the college application process and matriculation to college.<\/span><\/div><\/a>

Applying to College: The Celebration!<\/h3>New Settlement has facilitated the placement of more than 3500 first generation students in college, with financial aid. Students supported by our program exceed national rates of college matriculation for low income students, as well as year-to-year retention and graduation rates.\r\n<\/span><\/div><\/a>
