PROGRAM OVERVIEW: The New York State Office of Children and Family Services School’s Advantage After School Program is a state-wide initiative to provide elementary school students with social, cultural and academic enrichment opportunities through activities in the arts, sciences, mathematics, leadership and health education all grounded in the best practices of youth development. New Settlement’s After School Program at the Mount Eden Children’s Academy (MECA)/PS 555, will operate Monday-Friday, from 2:00pm – 6:00pm, for children in 1st – 5th grades.
POSITION DESCRIPTION & DUTIES: Each Group Leader will supervise an Assistant Group Leader and one group of 20 children organized by grade levels 1-5. The Group Leader will directly teach, nurture and encourage the children to perform at a high standard by setting a positive, engaging and fun tone. Responsibilities include: planning and leading quality activities and trips; ensuring the safety of students at all times; anticipating and resolving conflict; reporting all incidents accurately and on time; supervising snack and homework time; maintaining the overall condition of the classroom; collaborating with after-school staff and teachers; interacting with parents at dismissal and participating in staff meetings and workshops. This position reports to the Program Director.
QUALIFICATIONS: Hold a Bachelor’s, Associate’s Degree and/or college students majoring in education or social work, and have at least two years experience working with school age children, or have a high school diploma or GED and equivalent 5 years supervised experience working with a school age child care program/center. Applicants must have experience leading elementary school level activities for children, preferably in an educational environment (school, after-school program, camp or day care center); be sensitive to diverse cultures; have experience with and knowledge of youth development practices and group work, ensuring safety of program participants; have knowledge of a specific content area; have strong planning and organizational skills; have the ability to supervise an Assistant Group Leader and to work in a team setting. All Group Leaders will need to hold current first aid/CPR certification or be willing to acquire certification within the first 3 months of employment. English and Spanish bilingual a plus.
COMPENSATION AND HOURS: $15 per hour. Must work 17.5 hours per week during the academic school year, including specific days during school holidays and must commit to the program for a full academic year (Sept-June); must participate in trainings, workshops, professional development and staff meetings for approximately 30 hours throughout the program year.
