DESCRIPTION OF BRONX HELPERS PROGRAM: With the motto, “Working for the Community to Better Our Lives,” the Bronx Helpers program provides summer enrichment program to 54 youth (6th-8th graders).The program is supported by Department of Youth and Community Development SONYC which offers activities such as literacy, math, science, engineering, cultural enrichment, leadership and community service, dance, healthy living, sports, arts and crafts, swimming, trips in New York City and much more during summer and school year.
Bronx Helpers identify and learn about issues affecting our community and participate in youth led social justice service projects that contribute to positive change. Program themes have included “Pedestrian Safety”, “Environmental Justice” and “Fighting Hunger.”
POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Group Leader plans, implements and develops project based educational, youth leadership, physical education and healthy living and literacy and arts workshops to 20 middle school participants ages 10 ½- 14 yrs., The Group Leader chaperones a group of 18-25 participants to different locations New York City while following the program’s policies and procedures in a pro-active manner and keeping the safety of the children the primary focus. The Group Leader works closely, assigns and monitors tasks given to the Group Worker and Counselors in Training. While program is in session, we balance academic enrichment and leadership development through hand-on projects and theme-based learning that encourages critical thinking and creativity. The Group Leader is expected to attend staff orientations, professional development trainings, and weekly staff meetings and to help staff special program celebrations and occasional weekend events
REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have experience working with youth. Knowledge of and interest in the arts, science, engineering, mathematics, healthy living, technology and physical education required. Applicants must have experience developing and leading middle-school level activities for children; have strong planning and organizational skills; team leadership, behavioral management, and conflict resolution skills; have the ability to supervise in facilitation of daily lesson plans and activities. Teamwork and hands-on teaching ability is a must.
All applicants should possess an ability to work independently and as part of a team, as well as a commitment to serving at-risk adolescents and their families. Applicants should also possess a willingness to engage in all aspects of job description. Responsibilities will include (but are not limited Facilitate activities such as teambuilding games, community awareness projects, academic support, arts & crafts etc. Previous experience with and commitment to exploring social justice issues with youth.
Education & Skills Required: College or graduate level student. Bilingual Spanish/English a plus. In order to work with the children, applicants must undergo a background check, in accordance with local regulations. Must be a dynamic, flexible, upbeat, with a strong desire to work with children, willingness to learn and adapt to an established camp culture, a good sense of humor, responsible, dependable and hands-on individual.
Knowledge of MS Office and e-mail correspondence. Excellent written and oral skills required. The position requires great people skills and ability to meet competing demands in a busy work environment. Physical effort is generally required for work performance in the classrooms and out in the field; may be required to lift items and spend several hours standing and walking when out in the field.
Salary and Benefits Offered:
Part-time, temporary position September 16th –June 19th Hourly rate: $16.00.
Availability: 2:30 – 6:00 p.m. (Flexible) Maximum 18 hrs. depending on how many days a week program is in operation.
