New Settlement Multicultural After School Program is for 100 Elementary School students (Kindergartner-Fifth grade). The COMPASS Program offers activities such as literacy, math, science, engineering, cultural enrichment, leadership and community service, dance, healthy living, sports, library, arts and crafts, swimming, trips in New York City and much more.
Program Overview and Position Description:
The Group Leader plans, implements and develops project based educational, youth leadership, physical education and healthy living and literacy and arts for 20 participants, ages 10-11 years old, in New Settlement Apartments Multi-Cultural After School Program (MASP). The Group Leader supervises a group of 20 participants on-site and when traveling to different locations New York City while following the program’s policies and procedures in a pro-active manner and keeping the safety of the children the primary focus. The Group Leader works closely, assigns and monitors tasks given to the Group Leader Assistant and volunteers. During the After School Program, we balance academic enrichment and leadership development through hand-on projects and theme-based learning that encourages critical thinking and creativity.
Experience Required: Applicants must have experience working with youth. Knowledge of and interest in the arts, science, engineering, mathematics, healthy living and physical education required. Applicants must have experience developing and leading elementary-school level activities for children; have strong planning and organizational skills; team leadership, behavioral management, and conflict resolution skills; have the ability to supervise in facilitation of daily lesson plans and activities. Teamwork and hands-on teaching ability is a must.
Education & Skills Required: College or graduate level student. Bilingual Spanish/English a plus. In order to work with the children, applicants must undergo a background check, in accordance with local regulations. Must be a dynamic, flexible, upbeat, with a strong desire to work with children, willingness to learn and adapt to an established program culture, a good sense of humor, multi-tasker, creative, ability to receive feedback, adaptable, ability to read lesson plans, responsible, dependable and hands-on individual. Knowledge of MS Office and e-mail correspondence. Excellent written and oral skills required. The position requires great people skills and ability to meet competing demands in a busy work environment. Physical effort is generally required for work performance in the classrooms and out in the field; may be required to lift items and spend several hours standing and walking when out in the field.
Availability: September 9th, 2019-June 19th 2020 from 1:45-5:30 p.m. Mandatory orientations on August 29th and 30th from 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. Staff meetings twice a month. Holiday Programming from 8:00-6:00 p.m. 9/30/19, 10/1/19, 11/11/19, 1/20/2020, 2/17/2020, 2/19/2020, 2/20/2020, 2/21/2020, 4/9/2020, 4/10/2020, 4/13/2020, 4/14/2020, 4/15/2020- A TOTAL OF 13 HOLIDAYS
Starting date: August 29th, 2019.
Salary and Benefits Offered:
The position is a part-time temporary position for 17.5 hours weekly starting August 29th. Hourly rate: $16.00.
After a 90 day introductory employment period, all New Settlement’s Multicultural After School Program employees are eligible to receive a free membership to the New Settlement Community Center, obtain discounted rates on wellness and fitness classes and free Shape Up NYC classes taking place at the New Settlement Community Center and continuing professional development during their employment period.
