PROGRAM OVERVIEW: The New York State Office of Children and Family Services School’s Advantage After School Program is a state-wide initiative to provide middle school students with social, cultural and academic enrichment opportunities through activities in the arts, sciences, mathematics, leadership and health education all grounded in the best practices of youth development. New Settlement’s After School Program at the Mount Eden Children’s Academy (MECA)/PS 555, will operate Monday-Friday, from 2:30pm – 6:00pm, for children in 1st-5th grades.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION & OVERVIEW: Guided by a Group Leader, the Assistant Group Leader will work with one group of 20 children organized by grade levels 1-5. The Assistant Group leader will support the Group Leader in teaching, nurturing and encouraging our children to perform at a high standard by setting a positive, engaging and fun tone. The responsibilities include helping to plan and lead quality activities and trips; helping to ensure the safety of students at all times; helping to anticipate and resolve conflict; assisting the Group Leader with reporting all incidents accurately and on time; helping supervise snack and homework time; maintaining the overall condition of the classroom; collaborating with the Group Leader, other after-school staff and teachers; interacting with parents at dismissal; and participating in staff meetings and workshops. This position reports to the Group Leader and Program Director.
QUALIFICATIONS: Assistant Group Leaders must be at least 16 year of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent; or be currently and successfully enrolled in in a high school program. Must have a genuine love of children and a personal commitment to making a difference in their lives; be dependable, outgoing and have an enthusiastic personality and enjoy working with others; have prior experience working with children; have the ability to carry out instructions to implement middle school level activities; and be committed to working as part of a team.
COMPENSATION AND HOURS: $ 13.50 per hour. Must work 17.5 hours per week during the academic school year, including specific days during school holidays and must commit to program for a full academic year (Sept-June); must participate in trainings, workshops, professional development and staff meetings for approximately 30 hours throughout the program year.
