Program Overview: New Settlement Multicultural After School Program and Summer Day Camp is for 100 Elementary School students (Kindergartner-Fifth grade). The COMPASS Program offers activities such as literacy, math, science, engineering, cultural enrichment, leadership and community service, dance, healthy living, sports, library, arts and crafts, swimming, trips in New York City and much more.
Program Overview and Position Description:
The Assistant Group Leader implements project based educational, youth leadership, physical education and healthy living and literacy and arts for 20 participants, ages 6-7 years old, in New Settlement Apartments Multi-Cultural Summer Day Camp. The Assistant Group Leader chaperones a group of 20 participants to different locations New York City while following the program’s policies and procedures in a pro-active manner and keeping the safety of the children the primary focus. The Assistant Group Leader works closely with a Group Leader and Jr. Assistants. During the Summer Day Camp, we balance academic enrichment and leadership development through hand-on projects and theme-based learning that encourages critical thinking and creativity.
Experience Required: Applicants must have experience working with youth. Knowledge of and interest in the arts, science, engineering, mathematics, healthy living and physical education required. Applicants must have experience developing and leading elementary-school level activities for children; have strong planning and organizational skills; team leadership, behavioral management, and conflict resolution skills; have the ability to facilitate daily lesson plans and activities. Teamwork and hands-on teaching ability is a must.
Education & Skills Required: High School Graduate and/or College student. Bilingual Spanish/English a plus. In order to work with the children, applicants must undergo a background check, in accordance with local regulations. Must be a dynamic, flexible, upbeat, with a strong desire to work with children, willingness to learn and adapt to an established camp culture, a good sense of humor, responsible, dependable and hands-on individual. Knowledge of e-mail correspondence. Excellent written and oral skills required. The position requires great people skills and ability to meet competing demands in a busy work environment. Physical effort is generally required for work performance in the classrooms and out in the field; may be required to lift items and spend several hours standing and walking when out in the field.
Availability: Monday- Friday from 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. from July 1st– August 16th. Starting date: June 17th, 2019.
Salary and Benefits Offered:
It is a temporary full-time position during the summer for 40 hours weekly. Hourly rate: $15.00.
