Assistant Dance Instructor – NSCC

DESCRIPTION
JOB SUMMARY: Part-time Instructor will plan and implement a Dance program for teen girls (ages 11-YA) based on the principles and practice of positive youth development. Responsibilities include leading a 2 weekly 3-hour class on Thursdays & Saturdays; providing warm-ups, instruction, and original choreography at a level of difficulty appropriate for the participants; involving participants in creating choreography when possible; conducting phone outreach and follow-up with participants and their parents/guardians; researching field trip & performance opportunities; supervising field trips; supervising the care and use of program space and equipment, and meeting every other week with Program Coordinator on a weekday (time flexible, between 10 AM and 6 PM).

Job Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Attend all classes, rehearsals, trips, and performances, advance arrangements are made.
  • Lead warm-up with students, including physical conditioning and supervision of students’ technique and alignment.
  • Record attendance for classes, rehearsals and trips.
  • Teaching of choreography to participants and Assistant Dance Instructor
  • Leading team-building exercises, and lead by example – demonstrating clear, respectful communication and modeling collaboration skills for youth.
  • Support students in developing their own choreography
  • Supervise classes and trips, maintaining participant safety, and upholding a supportive and inclusive environment for all students using a positive youth development model
  • Participate in monthly staff meetings
  • Participate in program/agency staff development workshops when scheduled (required), as well as professional development in the fields of dance and youth development
  • Maintain friendly but professional boundaries with program participants, especially peers close in age (or with whom you might have worked/performed, prior to being hired).
  • Perform in the semi-annual showcases, special events (such as Momma’s Hip Hop Kitchen) and as part of the Elite traveling company if needed.
  • Ability to listen to and communicate effectively with program staff, participants and their families.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, under the supervision of the Director of Programs for Girls.
  • Perform other duties as reasonably requested.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be vaccinated or have letter of exemption.
  • College degree preferred.
  • Background in dance required, multiple styles preferred: Hip-Hop, Latin, African and/or Jazz desirable.
  • Bilingual a plus but not a requirement
  • Minimum of 1-year previous experience planning and leading dance activities with teens in a community-based setting.
  • Ability to work Thursdays 6pm-9pm (Juniors) and Saturdays, 1pm-4pm (Seniors), but additional time and days will be added for rehearsal prior to performances and special events.
  • Ability to relate to persons of diverse backgrounds

Employment is at will and employees will undergo 45- and 90-day check-ins during their 90-day probationary period.
