Working closely with the Lead Dance Instructor, the Assistant Dance Instructor will provide dance instruction to girls and young women aged 10-young adult in two age groups. Responsibilities include: Leading warm up with students, including physical conditioning and supervising students’ technique and alignment; taking attendance, assist with teaching and demonstrating choreography; assist with team-building exercises; maintain clear, respectful communication and model collaboration skills for youth; supporting students in developing their own choreography; assisting the Lead Instructor in developing choreography; maintaining participant safety, upholding a supportive and inclusive environment for all students following a positive youth development model; performing with students in the semi-annual showcases, special events and as part of the Elite traveling company.
The Next Level Dance program is a gender-specific program, part of the Program for Girls & Young Women at New Settlement; participants identify as girls and young women, or are gender non-conforming.
EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION & SKILLS REQUIRED:
Minimum of 1 year previous experience working directly with youth (preferably adolescents) in a community-based setting. Five years’ experience with dance in a variety of styles. Some previous experience leading dance activities required. Current undergraduate students or college graduates preferred. Patience, compassion, professional boundaries, and leadership skills. Strong background in dance performance and hip-hop style a must, knowledge of other dance styles a plus. English/Spanish bilingual skills a plus. A passion for helping to build a program and preferably willing to commit at least 2 years.
HOURS AND COMPENSATION:
This is a part-time position, avg. 7 hours per week during the first three months of each fall and spring semester, increasing to 15+ hrs/wk for about four weeks prior to semi-annual performance showcases (January and May/June). Classes meet Thursdays 6-8:30 (Juniors) and Saturdays, 12:30-4 (Seniors); additional time and days added for rehearsal prior to performances, as well as for overnight retreats and trips to attend dance performances. Rate of pay: $15-$18 hourly, depending on experience.
