The New Settlement After School Program at the PS 311\/PS 294 campus serves 300 students, grades K-5, at 1425 Walton Avenue in the South Bronx (Map). Each program activity is based on a primary academic or leadership area (arts, literacy, math, physical activity, health, etc.). The schedule of activities is balanced to engage the children in a fun yet challenging series of complementary activities that are different than the school day, yet structured to support each child\u2019s increased success.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Some of the activities we are currently providing:<\/p>

YOGA<\/strong><\/p>

Through basic yoga poses, yoga games, mindfulness activities, music, and stories, children build strength, coordination, flexibility, and body awareness. Breathing and visualization techniques teach students self-control, focus, and relaxation.<\/p>

HEALTHY LIVING ACTIVITIES<\/strong><\/p>

Facilitated by Cook, Play, Live, Inc. Educators<\/strong><\/p>

Students participate in nutrition awareness activities and cooking workshops. They create their own healthy meals and take home the recipe to share with their families.<\/p>

Taught by Children\u2019s Museum of Manhattan Teaching Artists.<\/strong><\/p>

Students journey around the world exploring unique artistic styles and mediums from different countries and cultures. By using a variety of art media, students deepen their perspective on the world while exploring elements like line, shape, color, form and texture.<\/p>

GYM<\/strong><\/p>

Facilitated by US Soccer Foundation trained Specialist to use the\u00a0Soccer For Success<\/strong>\u00a0curriculum.<\/p>

Students are introduced to the sport of soccer, while also acquiring the tools they need to improve their physical health, increase their knowledge about healthy lifestyles and improve their self-esteem and behavior.<\/p>

Taught by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Educators<\/strong><\/p>

A Partnership with New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.<\/p>

Students participate in hands-on activities through which youth learn about environmental concepts such as wise resource use, predator\/prey relationships (e.g. children dissected owl pellets), and fish ecology.\u00a0 They then focus on a stewardship project (Recycling).<\/p>

DANCE<\/strong><\/p>

Students learn Jazz\/Hip-Hop dances facilitated by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater instructors.<\/p>

CAPOEIRA<\/strong><\/p>

Taught by Abad\u00e1 \u2013 Capoeira Instructor<\/strong><\/p>

Students learn the basic movements of Capoeira, how to play the percussive instruments used in Capoeira and learn songs in Portuguese.\u00a0 Students gain a broader understanding of the history, philosophy and cultural importance of capoeira and African contribution in Brazil and the Diaspora.<\/p>

ECHO Program \u2013 Einstein Community Health Outreach in collaboration with the Montefiore Medical Center\u2019s School Health Program.<\/strong><\/p>

A Team of diverse women & men who are first and second-year medical students from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, supervised by MDs lead the implementation of the research-based ECHO interactive Science and health education curriculum.\u00a0 Students participate in hands-on activities that explore human anatomy and biology and emphasize healthy development in their community. They learn the benefits of physical activity and healthy eating on their bodies and the harmful effects of tobacco, with age-appropriate units on the passage into puberty.\u00a0 Children also learn about using safety and treating minor burns and injuries.<\/p>
